Country-Shaped Maze Maps: Geography Meets Puzzle in One Beautiful Page

Spain, France, Japan, Italy, Australia — real, solvable mazes shaped like countries, with famous landmarks painted right into the map. See the full gallery with solutions, and learn how we guarantee every maze is solvable.

What if a map was also a maze?

We have been working on something special: country-shaped maze maps. Each one is a real, fully solvable maze whose outer border is the exact silhouette of a country — and inside, the country's most famous landmarks are painted right into the artwork, sitting at their true geographic locations.

These are not decorative illustrations that merely look like mazes. Every single one is generated by our maze engine first, then illustrated — so there is always exactly one guaranteed path from start to finish. You can print them, solve them with a pencil, and check your answer against the included solution page.

Every country also has its own dedicated page with the full landmark tour and difficulty notes: Spain · France · Japan · Italy · Australia

Spain — from the Sagrada Familia to the Alhambra

The journey starts in the Canary Islands and ends in the Balearics. Along the way you will squeeze past the Sagrada Familia, Madrid's Royal Palace, the windmills of La Mancha, a flamenco dancer, and a very determined bull.

Stuck? Here is the solution — the shortest path runs 1,290 maze cells:

France — a watercolor tour de France

Hand-drawn watercolor style: the Eiffel Tower, Mont Saint-Michel, the châteaux of the Loire, lavender fields in Provence, and the vineyards of Bordeaux. Start in Brittany, finish on the Côte d'Azur.

Japan — four islands, one path

The archipelago is the hardest shape we have tackled: four main islands connected into a single continuous maze. Mount Fuji, the floating torii of Itsukushima, Osaka Castle, cherry blossoms, and a sea dragon guarding the Pacific.

Italy — solve the boot

Italy's silhouette is probably the most recognizable country shape on Earth — which makes it perfect for a maze. The route winds past the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Venice's canals, Mount Vesuvius, and the Trulli houses of Puglia, with Sicily and Sardinia joined into the puzzle.

Australia — a continent-sized puzzle

The largest maze of the set. Uluru sits dead center, a kangaroo bounds across the outback, the Sydney Opera House marks the southeast coast, and the Great Barrier Reef fringes the northeast — outside the maze walls, of course.

How we guarantee every maze is solvable

Behind the painted hedges is a proper maze engine:

  • Exact silhouette: the country outline becomes the maze boundary, landmark areas are carved out so the path flows around them.
  • Perfect maze generation: a seeded depth-first-search algorithm generates the corridors — every cell is reachable, and there is exactly one simple path between start and finish.
  • Verified solutions: a breadth-first search proves solvability and renders the red solution trail you see above. If the algorithm cannot solve it, it never ships.
  • Painted afterwards: the illustration layer (hedges, shadows, ships, compass roses) is rendered on top of the verified geometry — the walls you see are exactly the walls the engine generated.

Perfect for activity books and classrooms

Country maze maps combine geography and puzzle-solving in one page, which makes them ideal for:

  • "Around the World" activity books — one country per spread, maze on the left, fun facts on the right.
  • Geography lessons — students trace the maze while learning where the Colosseum or Mount Fuji actually is.
  • Travel-themed gifts and party printables — planning a trip to Japan? Warm up with the maze first.

Want to use these in your own books?

Country maze maps will be joining the MazeDIY catalog, available watermark-free and print-ready under our Commercial Publishing License — the same license KDP and Etsy publishers already use for our photo mazes. If you would like early access when they launch, drop us a line.

In the meantime, you can already turn any photo or shape into a solvable maze with the MazeDIY generator.
